POST-OPERATIVE TREATMENTS

The assessment involves discussing how the problem interferes with activities of daily living and any issues such as residual swelling or pain.

A physical assessment is required which covers strength, range of movement, balance, flexibility and movement patterns.  Any assessment will take into account the Patient's age and ability and be adjusted to suit the present level of mobility and confidence.

Various outcome measures will be used as these can be used to illustrate improvement to the Patient, as well as to attending doctors and even insurance companies if appropriate.

An outcome measure is literally a measure of ability at the present time. It can be as simple as a questionnaire to assess and clarify a Patient's level of confidence in their own ability or a series of tests / physical movements marked to give a total score.

These scores can be important as a measure of the Patient's improvement or, in other words, the  effectiveness of the service but they are only significant if they measure exactly what is appropriate.  There are thousands of different outcome measures so it is essential that, to be used productively, the correct measures are chosen at the correct stage of treatment.
