Whatever
disorder or problem, a detailed assessment is essential. Since
neurological problems can be so complex, assessment continues
throughout the rehabilitation treatment process to constantly review
progress and goals.
The initial assessment will involve the completion of
questionnaires, discussion and motor and sensory testing within the
Patient's current abilities. Any testing will be appropriate
to the Patient's present medical and physical status.
Suitable clothing should be worn and it may be necessary for some
clothing to be removed at certain stages of the assessment.
It may also be necessary for the Therapist to palpate (touch) and
move the Patient's limbs during the assessment process.
At any stage of the assessment or treatment process, the Patient can
decide whether they want the process to continue or be stopped if
they are uncomfortable or in pain.
It is important to set goals, both long term and short term at any
stage of treatment. These can be re-assessed and re-designed
at any stage by the Patient and their family, with the assistance of
the Therapist.
Treatment is aimed at achieving these goals through practice and
education. |
