MOVEMENT ANALYSIS

IF YOU DO NOT USE IT – YOU WILL LOSE IT.
Sadly, very often, people struggle to put up with problems or are told to “live with it” even if they have undergone surgery such as a joint replacement or some form of injury.

Although I do not treat soft tissue  / musculoskeletal injuries as such, I  assess how the body has adapted or developed compensation techniques due to whatever trauma it has been through and how best to treat these.  For example:

A sprained ankle
The human foot has over 20 joints in it and these tend to lose their ability to comprehend and translate joint position information (proprioception) within 24 hours of injury.  Even when pain and swelling has gone the body keeps using the compensations that it has picked up.  These can lead to further problems with movement; for example balancing on one leg to put on a sock remains difficult so is avoided, this can therefore lead to  problems going go up or down stairs, which limits mobility more and more.

    A major joint replacement
Once the initial therapy has been completed after the surgery. Problems have been known to occur several months afterwards because the compensation techniques acquired either before the surgery or afterwards do not necessarily immediately affect the patient.  For example, several years after a knee replacement, problems occurred with balance because, despite having been taught and practising exercises to strengthen the quadriceps, the memory of how to do the exercise had been corrupted and the correct pattern of movement of the knee joint had been disrupted.

Illness leading to extended period in bed
This can lead to a general state of weakness and de-conditioning which can cause poor mobility and balance problems.

Luckily, many people do not have long term problems after surgery or injury; but if you feel you do, or even feel that movement has become more difficult, then this service may be able to help you.
