Because of the variety of the symptoms and lack of focal
physical signs, the history taking is the most important
part of the assessment. The whole range of
possible predisposing conditions should be examined due
tot he potential for multi-factorial dizziness.
Prior to assessment, the patient is asked to complete
questionnaires such as the Situational Vertigo
Questionnaire, the Dizziness Handicap Inventory or
confidence questionnaires.
The initial assessment procedure can take between 2 –
2.5 hours depending on the severity or sensitivity of
the symptoms. Treatment sessions following this
are much shorter, approximately half an hour once a week
or once a fortnight depending on progress. The only
exception to this is if a particle repositioning
manoeuvre has been carried out when a check up
appointment is scheduled for 2 days after the manoeuvre.
Patients must be aware
that testing is provocative and will reproduce their
symptoms. Consent must be obtained. |
